Love in four scenes

I created this illustration as a gift for a lovely client to give to friends who had recently bought a house and were expecting a baby.

We decided to create a story in four scenes: the proposal, with a typical Italian candy that had a love note inside; the couple munching on the candy; the pregnancy and a house! And then, at long last, the baby!

Before landing on the more muted vintage tones, I was working with very saturated color.

I usually go for saturation unless a client redirects me. In this case, the colors evoke vintage film posters, to match the design of their home.

The illustration above was the third draft I created. Below you see the other two:

A sequence I sketched that would also somehow touch on vintage movies, with comic poses and a baby in sunglasses. I liked it a lot but couldn’t get the posing to work.

Another draft I loved was this tiny baby grabbing its parents’ hands. A love of music translated into a suggestion of song over its head. In the end the client preferred the story in 4 scenes, so we
